Recital by the Lavanter Wind Quintet at the Minster

CLEFExquisite harmonies and tendril textures of the Levanter Wind Quintet

I would like to thank the Quintet - Anne Bryant (flute) Sandra Knights (oboe) Chris Knights (clarinet) Barry Carben (bassoon) Lynne Roberts (French horn) for their delightful recital held on the Feast of St Felix. Founded by Barry Carben who conjured glorious deep velvety sonorities on his bassoon

The Quintet, all of whose members are so highly talented and dedicated , presented an extremely entertaining programme. The Quintet opened with Mozart’s beguiling ‘Divertimento No. 8, ‘harmonising to perfection in the four lovely movements, a lively allegro at either end and a charming ‘Andante and Minuet’

Juxtaposed Ferenc Farkas’ ‘Ancient Hungarian Dances ‘ Nos. 1,2, and 5, with their folksy rhythms and mid- European melodies were a complete contrast , transporting the audience vicariously to yesteryear Hungary

Throughout the recital the breath control and lung capacity of the instrumentalists was admirable as was their fingering

Perhaps the highlight was ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square’ the limpid liquid notes and tendril textures of the flute evoking the haunting birdsong. This was paired with. ‘All the things you are‘ which was imbued with some affecting moments

Pierre’s. ‘Pastorale‘ evoking a rural idyll received a sensitive interpretation and filled the nave with a certain bucolic glow
