Recital by Martyn Marshall at The Minster

held on Wednesday 30th August

MARTYN MARSHALL 10-2023On a very beautiful day former organist at the Minster Martyn Marshall , presented a quirky, unusual choice of programme which the audience very much enjoyed. Familiar overtures featured prominently, the recitalist opening with the Overture to Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss ll and concluding with the Overture to Pirates of Penzance by Arthur Sullivan who is thought to have visited Lound Hall

The Overture to Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro also gave great pleasure. In contrast to the lighter works there was an engaging progression of compositions of greater gravitas .These included the traditional Irish tune of the 6th century ‘Be Thou My Vision ‘ attributed to St Dallan Forgaill. Matthias Nagel’s postlude for The Strong Tower (Ein feste burg ist unser Gott) God is our refuge and strength, whetted our appetite to hear the complete work while the variations Gib Uns Friedans (give us peace) melody by Rudeger Laders expressed everyone’s yearning for an end to war and conflict. A Scherzo by Sir Charles Parry was rather endearing

Jane Freeman introduced the recital thanking Michael Nicholas for organizing the summer lunchtime recitals, afterwards Jane warmly thanked Martyn Marshall for his recital. He will be the soloist in Saint- Saens’s Organ Symphony, 30th September in the church during
the Great Yarmouth Arts Festival
