Farmers straighten St Benet's Cross of Peace
Some local farmers have come to the rescue of a Broads landmark after passers by spotted it was 'on the huh'
The Cross of Peace at St Benet's Abbey, on the banks of the River Bure, had developed an alarming tilt
The 20-feet cross, which was installed almost 40 years ago, was a gift from Queen Elizabeth II and is made from English oak from the royal estate at Sandringham. Over the decades it has received a battering from the elements and is also used as a scratching post by the cows that graze the surrounding marshes, leading to it developing a noted lean
With days to go before an annual open air service was to be held at the sacred site, local farmers volunteered to help straighten the impressive landmark. Using a cherry picker and tools, they helped nudge it back upright
Revd Ben Bradshaw, the local rector, said: "We have some wonderful local farmers at St Benet’s who came out with their machinery to straighten up the cross. It is testament to the Norfolk spirit that their time and effort was given voluntarily and we are so grateful to Tim, Sam and Louis for their help”
