As I write this we have just had the wonderful Easter season, where we have celebrated the wonderful resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. He appeared to His friends, the disciples, His followers, and to many other, regular, normal people like ourselves. He was with us on earth for 40 days until His Ascension into heaven, going back to His Father. It is this next amazing part of the story that we are now looking forward to—Ascension Day on Thursday 29th May. There will be services in most churches, celebrating this awesome day
Thomas, the renowned doubter of the risen Lord, before actually seeing Him, is totally overcome at the sight of the risen Lord, and instantly believes and knows that He is truly the Lord, and God. He is completely convinced that, yes, Jesus is the Christ, our Lord and our God, completely divine, no more doubt at all. How shattering that feeling must have been for him, and also for the other disciples to hear. What must they have thought, had Thomas gone mad? Yet something more amazing was to come
After the Ascension, the disciples are left waiting for the gift of the Holy Spirit to come upon them, at the feast of Pentecost, 10 days after the Ascension, 50 after the Resurrection. What a lot to happen to Christ and His disciples in such a short space of time. The disciples spent this time together waiting for the Holy Spirit to come upon them, but they did not know when or how it would appear. They knew that afterwards they would set out separately on their journeys across the world to take the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ around the world to all who hadn’t heard it. A daunting task, many of us would think, but filled with the Holy Spirit they are equipped for their journeys
Today, these journeys are still taking place around the world - Priests, Missionaries are still going out and telling the Good News of the Lord’s Gospel. After 2000years the Gospel is still going strong, and even today new people are hearing the Good News and turning to Christ
May we all take a few minutes over this Ascension Tide and Pentecost to read some of this amazing News for ourselves and remind ourselves that we are part of a truly amazing family. God Bless You All
