Sunday 6th October

Heavenly Father, sometimes I hear a song and I find the words, what can I say, a bit unrealistic. Forgive me Lord if I go too far in what I pray. I would love to be able to sing these song words: "I'll never grow weary, my passion won't fade, with fervour and love, Your name will be praised
 
In all that I do , Lord, my heart is for You, I'll serve You forever, my soul renewed". I know I grow weary. I know my passion fades. I know I don't always praise Your name with fervour and love. I know that my heart is not always for You in all that I do. But I do know I will be with You forever when my soul is renewed
 
Thank You Jesus that when I grow weary, You strengthen me. Thank You that when my passion fades You encourage me by Your Spirit. Thank You that when I lack fervour and love in my praise and worship You forgive me and accept the little I have to offer and remind me that the angels are worshipping too
 
My drop in the ocean is still part of the ocean of praise and worship. Thank You that Your love never fails and that I can trust Your promise: "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you  your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws"
 
Why am I here again today, praying, praising and worshipping? Because You have moved me, moved my heart, so I want to be here with You. The renewal of my soul started when I said "Yes" to Jesus. Keep me going Lord; the same song encourages me: "my spirit's alive, I'll  press on in faith, as You lead my life"

Saturday 5th October

Heavenly Father, thank You for the peace that passes all understanding. I was asking yesterday: "Which way do we turn when we don't know which way to turn?" Your Word gives us this great advice: "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus"
 
Having prayed, consulted family and friends, and prayed some more, we find peace when we have made a decision and that peace is priceless. Our troubled minds can stop racing and we can turn our thoughts to things which are far greater than our troubles
 
Your Word continues: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable - if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me - put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you"
 
Only You, the God of peace, by Your Spirit, can bring the peace that passes all understanding. Only You can bring peace in the middle of the storm. Only You can get us immediately to the shore. Thank You for this assurance, this blessed assurance, that only You can bring: "Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine. Oh what a foretaste of glory divine. Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of His Spirit, washed in His blood". Thank You

Friday 4th October

Heavenly Father, which way do we turn when we don't know which way to turn? What do we do when we have two options and both have good things to offer? What do we do when both ways could lead to freedom or either could lead to disaster? What do we do when either road could lead to life or death?
 
The phrase about 'being caught between a rock and hard place' comes to mind. Your Word tells me: "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the Way; walk in it'". You know, sometimes it is very hard to hear Your voice Lord
 
Another passage of Scripture says: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight". This seems to imply that we do not need to turn the right or left for You  will make the path straight. It is hard to believe this when the path so far has been long and winding with many twists and turns, many ups and downs
 
However, I do know You have been with us, guiding us through everything, both good and bad. But now You seem silent. Could it be that You don't mind which way we turn, saying to us, "You can choose. I will be with You whichever path You take"
 
Is there a path that goes straight on with no turn to the left or the right? I guess life is never like that, every day we have choices to make. All we can do is trust You, knowing whatever happens You will bring us home. I could say, "Thanks for nothing!" But instead I would rather say, "Thanks for everything". In God we trust

Thursday 3rd October

Heavenly Father, it is very easy to take everything for granted. The life we live, the place we live, the food on the table, our families and friends, the clothes on our backs, the shoes on our feet, even the air we breathe. All of this is a gift! A gift from You! The only response to such a gift is to say, "Thank You"
 
Many disasters happened in the life of Job but his response is this: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised". It may be that the story of Job is allegorical, a story, poem or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one; but whether it is an allegory or it really happened, the truth is there. You give and You take away
 
There are people in life who have very little and sometimes even that is taken away! In the end God blessed Job with twice as much as he had before. We may think that is ridiculous; that never happens in real life! But the Truth is there is more to this than meets the eye. Job trusted You when he had everything and when he had nothing
 
Whatever happens in life, when we trust You we know that we will be blessed; it may be in Heaven, but we will be blessed. Jesus had everything, came to the earth with nothing, and when crucified trusted You, and is now seated at Your right hand
 
Father, give me faith like Job and Jesus to trust You, and give thanks and praise, whether I have everything or nothing. Thank You

Wednesday 2nd October

Heavenly Father, during prayer yesterday the phrase "Everything in moderation" came up. Overnight, when I was awake, a thought came into my head, "What about zeal?" I remembered that when You went up to Jerusalem, in the temple court You found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So You made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; You scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves You said, "Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father's house into a market!"
 
And Your disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for Your house will consume me". The words they remembered were written by King David, who also had zeal for Your house: "For I endure scorn for Your sake, and shame covers my face. I am a foreigner to my own family, a stranger to my own mother's children; for zeal for Your house consumes me, and the insults of those who insult You fall on me. When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn; when I put on sackcloth, people make sport of me. Those at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards".
David knew what it was like to be mocked and sneered at; so would You in later days in Jerusalem
 
Father, may I have moderation in many things, perhaps most things, but never in my love and service for You. May zeal for Your house, for You, for Jesus, consume me too

Tuesday 1st October

Heavenly Father, there is far more to say about how much You love me than how much I love You. You are the One who gave up Heaven and came to the earth so that when I die and leave the earth I can go to Heaven

You are the One who was cast out of the city not me
You are the One who went to the cross so I don't have to
You are the One who so loved me! "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life" 

The whole Bible tells of Your love for Your people. The whole Bible tells of Your love for me. Help me to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge - that I may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God
 
I know at least this, although Your love for me is undoubtedly greater than my love for You, I do love You.

Your love is perfect and mine is imperfect, but still, I do love You.
Your love is constant and mine wavers, but still, I do love You.
Your love is unending and mine comes and goes, but still, I love You.

I love You like a brother, and brothers might argue and fight, fall out and not speak, but still You love me and I still love You

 
Thank You for always being there, always with me. When I can't feel Your presence You are only a prayer away. Thank You for Your patience, Your kindness, Your support, Your encouragement, Your humility, Your selflessness, Your gentleness, Your forgiveness, Your honesty, Your protection, Your reliability, and Your perseverance. Your love never fails. Thank You. I love You

Monday 30th September

Heavenly Father, I finished praying yesterday talking about the smallest things we know about. In church yesterday we looked at lots of different seeds which grow into all kinds of fruit and vegetables. We sang this great hymn: "We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the land, but it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand; He sends the snow in winter, the warmth to swell the grain, the breezes and the sunshine, and soft refreshing rain"
 
Once we have sowed the seed, whatever it is, there is very little we can do to help it grow. What we do is to add fertiliser to make the soil richer, which is adding more microbes, the smallest things, but we still can't do anything to make it grow
 
Part of the verse above explains a little of how it grows: "it is fed and watered by God's almighty hand". Water from the skies, I get; but how do you feed it? Through the soil! All the nutrients it needs are there. The chorus of the hymn reminds us of Your goodness: "All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above; Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord, for all His love"
 
When You created all things "visible and invisible" You created a living planet with everything in it to supply our needs. If the planet were dead then nothing would grow and we could not survive! What an absolute genius You are
 
The hymn tells us what we can give You in return: "No gifts have we to offer for all Thy love imparts, but that which Thou desirest, our humble, thankful hearts". Lord, thank You. You have my heart
