Love

Jennifer Rush’s “The Power of Love” is one of the famous songs she sang way back in 1980s. This song went number one in the UK in 1985 and became the biggest selling single that year. It was also number one in other European countries. Though the song was all about romance yet it was powerful enough to move the hearts of the listeners and no wonder it was a top hit not only in the UK but also around the world. It has been said that the three most powerful words in the English language are “I love you.” And I believe some people, if not all, would agree with this. But how can love be so powerful? What does it do to us?

dove leftAccording to Dr Karl Meninger, a famous psychiatrist in America, Love is the medicine for the sickness of this world. For him, love cures. It cures those who give it and those who receive it. In our present time a lot of people from different walks of life have different views about love. Some says, it’s all about feelings. Others confuse love with sex or with money or with gifts

And many people don’t understand what true love is and some are even afraid of it because they’ve never seen it done well. But in spite of all the different views about love it is still true that what the world needs now is love. And not just the word “love,” but we need the real thing. We need to see love and to hear it and to feel it and to experience it in our lives. And we need to know how to pass it along to others

The Bible suggests another kind of love. It is called the “Agape”. It is a self-sacrificing love. Agape love is love that reaches out to another person with no strings attached. It is love that sacrifices itself on behalf of the one loved, with no thought of what might be received in return. This is the word Paul uses in I Corinthians 13. It is love that starts with God, comes down to us, and then moves out from us to other people. You can experience this kind of love, the only thing you can do is ask for it
