Sunday 19th October
Lord Jesus, You were a master craftsman in Your time on earth. You were skilled in the use of the tools of a carpenter, as the well-known hymn suggests: "Whose strong hands were skilled at the plane and the lathe..." You would have been aware of every tool in Your workshop, and known what every tool was used for; every tool had a purpose
Later, in the last three years of Your life, You also worked in people's lives; then You used a different set of tools. Sometimes, You used a Word of Scripture, as when You were confronted by the enemy in the wilderness. When You met a blind man You: "spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes." You said to him: "Go, wash in the Pool of Siloam” So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. You healed Peter's mother-in-law's fever with a touch. You restored a man's withered hand on the Sabbath, telling him to "stretch it out"
The paralytic at the Pool of Bethesda, You told him to get up, pick up his mat, and walk, and he was healed. The centurion's servant You healed from a distance, simply by Your word. A woman suffering from bleeding for 12 years was healed when she touched the hem of Your garment, You turned and saw her and said: “Take heart, daughter, your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment
In Cana, You turned water into wine at a wedding when the wine ran out. You fed five thousand people with five loaves and two fish. In a different Way, You had many tools in Your 'healing toolbox' using each one as You saw fit
Today, Your Spirit works through us to bring healing, reconciliation and restoration. We are Your hands and feet! We are the tools in Your toolbox! As we often pray: "Almighty God, we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Send us out into the world in the power of your Spirit, to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen." Lord, pick us up and use us today, as You see fit. Thank You

Saturday 18th October
Heavenly Father, when Jesus showed John what was to come, which John wrote down in 'Revelation' there are many mysterious pictures which foretell of events to come
There is one passage that has been speaking to me this morning: "Then I heard every creature in Heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying: 'To Him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honour and glory and power, for ever and ever!' The four living creatures said, 'Amen,' and the elders fell down and worshipped"
I was trying to picture the scene, but our earthly events in the biggest arenas cannot begin to show what this will be like. We are looking at billions of people plus all other creatures on earth and under the earth and in the sea, plus every creature in Heaven. I was wondering, somewhat selfishly I guess, if I would be able to see?
Rather like Zacchaeus! "Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see Him, since Jesus was coming that way"
Then it occurred to me, that You are God and perhaps You are so vast that even from eternity's distance everyone would be able to see You; rather like everyone can see the sky all at once; and how we can all see something as small as a bird all at once. I was also reassured that, despite the crowds Jesus could see Zacchaeus. "When Jesus reached the spot, He looked up and said to him, 'Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.'" Distance and crowds has never been a problem for You!
And even today, with me on earth, You can still see me; Your Spirit in me and all around me. However it works in Heaven I'm sure I have no reason to worry. What a twerp I can be! Looking forward to You seeing me today and in eternity, when I will see You, face-to-face

Friday 17th October
Heavenly Father, sometimes tears just come, even unexpectedly. I remembered a chorus from Handel's 'Messiah' this morning when I sat down to pray: 'And the glory of the Lord will be revealed' so I listened to it, and tears came
Some days it seems that all I want is for Your glory to be revealed. I know this can and will happen, because the passage from Isaiah assures us: 'and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” I know this has already come true when Jesus came and lived among us. And I know it can come true today when miraculous things happen and Your glory is revealed
And I know it will certainly come true when Jesus returns: “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne." And: "There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea... At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near”
I'm not sure why the tears came? Is it because it has happened? Is it because I hope it will happen today? Is it because it will happen when Jesus returns in the future and I want it to happen soon? What I do know is that whenever You appear, Lord Jesus, You bring healing and an end to suffering. You did in the past and You still do today. And when You finally appear: “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and He will dwell with them
They will be His people, and God Himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” Just the thought of that great and glorious day is enough to bring tears to my eyes! "Hallelujah! For the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; And He shall reign for ever and ever, King of kings, and Lord of lords. Hallelujah!" Lord, I simply can't wait to see You in all Your glory! At present, I can only imagine

Thursday 16th October
Heavenly Father, I very much want my focus to be on Jesus today. Having focused briefly on demons yesterday I want give myself entirely over to You today. The world has much to offer, and much of it is good and reflects Your glorious nature, from panoramic vistas to the beauty of a single flower. There is also much darkness, but again I want to concentrate on the Light of the world, Jesus
Your Word tells us: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things"
Lord Jesus, You are all of these things! You are the Truth, not a word of a lie crossed Your lips. St Peter testifies: “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” The New Testament alluded to the Old Testament prophet Isaiah, who prophesied about Jesus: "He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth"
Lord Jesus, Your humility, compassion, sacrifice, and service, Your love, forgiveness, kindness, and self-control are all aspects of Your noble character. Although King of kings and Lord of lords You met with the lowly, yet treated them like princes and princesses. You did not condemn a woman caught in adultery, and a prostitute came to You and You told her: “Your sins are forgiven”
There is so much to admire about You, not least Your sacrifice on our behalf. It was Your choice to do as Your Father asked: "No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.” Because of Your redeeming sacrifice, You are worthy of all our praise
Lord, fill us today with Your Holy Spirit that our trust in You, though unseen, may be seen by others: "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see." You are our Beautiful Saviour; our Wonderful Counsellor You are clothed in majesty. You are the Lord of history. You are the Way, the Truth, the Life. Help me to keep all of this in my mind today

Wednesday 15th October
Heavenly Father, occasionally I hear people talk about 'the demo drink.' I guess this is mostly in films and books, but I have heard the phrase in reality too. I'm not sure at all that drink is a demon, however I do believe in demons, and that demons may use alcohol as a way to bind people and bring them into slavery, building strongholds in their lives. I am sure that demons use anything they can to do this
Jesus said to the disciples, “Let us go somewhere else - to the nearby villages - so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” The Bible tells us that He then travelled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons
The Bible clearly teaches that demons are real: "The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work." When Jesus was in the Temple, He read from the prophet Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” He then said: “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Your Word tells the Truth about Jesus! "When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick"
Lord Jesus, You dealt with both physical and spiritual suffering, even confronting demons with a single or simple word. You cared for people’s suffering, including those trapped in spiritual bondage. This is all we need to know to believe that demons are real
Lord, You continue to work today, as You are "the same yesterday, today and forever." By Your power, release those today who we know are captives, no matter what the demons are using to hold them in bondage; no matter what strongholds have been built, tear them down
Again, the Bible reveals the Truth: "The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds." Our weapon is prayer, praise and worship, Your Spirit responding according to our faith. Strengthen our faith that we may see captives released. You said “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me." Exercise Your authority, please, and exorcise those in any kind of bondage today. Thank You

Tuesday 14th October
Heavenly Father, there is a common phrase which I occasionally hear, and sometimes use myself. "This is doing my head in." Jesus told this parable: "Suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbours together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ " I can well imagine that as she searches, at first unsuccessfully, she may well be saying to herself, "This is doing my head in"
I know from experience, even today, that being unable to find something can be very frustrating. Having searched apparently everywhere, and then gone and looked in exactly the same places again, to no avail, eventually the coin, or whatever it is, turns up. I can understand the woman in the parable calling her friends and neighbours. In my situation I might simply call out, "Found it!"
Lord, You used this parable to explain about how You feel, and about all Heaven feels, about someone who turns from their sinful ways and decides to follow You. "In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Every day it seems there is more to find about You
I wonder if there is also rejoicing over each new discovery. I know there was great rejoicing when the Covid vaccine was discovered. And great rejoicing when the two World Wars were declared over. Your Word reminds us: "Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness"
Help me to look for Your mercies, Your compassions every day. After all, they are new every morning. They are waiting to be found. And when I find them, may I rejoice and tell everyone what I have found; especially those who struggle with the Gospel as it "Does their head in." Thank You

Monday 13th October
Heavenly Father, help me to be patient as I sit here with You. It is so easy to be rushing off to something else. Even as I sit here with You, talking to You and listening to You, I can be distracted, my mind seems to have a mind of its own; it wanders off so easily. It can be a new gadget to play with, or the gym to get to. (OK, so we both laughed at the idea of the gym!) Even something good, harmless, fun, can be a temptation away from You. Gardening, walking, composing a song, or even building a temple!
Lord Jesus, You told a parable about a man who prepared a banquet, and invited people to attend. “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’ Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.' Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come’"
This is how it can be when we are invited to sit with You and receive our daily bread, to feed on Your Word, receiving Spiritual refreshment, wisdom, knowledge, and guidance. It can even get to the point where we don't sit with You at all. Other things take priority, becoming idols in our lives, and like the people invited to the banquet, we make what seem to be quite valid excuses, and thus our relationship with You becomes distant. Right at the beginning, the temptation that led to the breakdown in our relationship seemed harmless enough, just an apple, but the consequences were disastrous
Lord, help me to resist the temptation to put anything before You. Help me to see what has become 'the apple of my eye' instead of You. There is time enough to do other things after You have finished talking to me, whether by reading Your Word, singing worship songs or through prayer. You are enough for me. You came so that we could have life in abundance, and it starts in Your presence
King David recognised this! "You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand." The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. "Look, I AM coming soon! My reward is with Me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the Tree of Life and may go through the gates into the city." Thank You
