Psalm 119 Biography of Yeshua
Psalm 119 The biography of Yeshua
As we know many Psalms, particularly the Psalms of King David are clearly Messianic in whole or part Ps 22 – 24 are prime examples, but there are several more (see footnotes). Many psalms are also prophetic Ps 2, 48 – the prophecies either fulfilled in the life death and resurrection of Yeshua or shortly to be fulfilled at His return Ps 48 and 98 …for He cometh to judge the Earth: with righteousness shall He judge the world , and the people with equity
Some psalms are obviously biographic of the authors Ps 51 has the repentance of King David following his sin over the adultery and related matters
So what category is the King’s Psalm in – we’re talking about Ps 119?
Of course, we have to address the contemporary historical context and audience – but we know that much of scripture is for our teaching and instruction. Indeed, on the Emmaus road Jesus showed the two dejected disciples how all the prophets, psalms and writings spoke of Him! SO how does this support the case for a biographical interpretation?
What a Bible study!
No one else can claim what several of the verses state
Every letter of the Hebrew Aleph-bet speaks in some way of Jesus and Ps 119 is structured as an acrostic poem around the 22 letters of the alphabet
It is a psalm in praise of the law – which only Jesus fulfilled completely
It is a psalm with key references to grace and mercy foreshadowing John 3:16
It shows the persecution and opposition that believers will face
It prophecies of the joy / gladness which those who fear God will experience when they see Him. E.g. Anna and Simeon
To my understanding it clearly prefigures key episodes in the life of Jesus especially related to His passion, the examination of the sacrificial lamb, Gethsemane, the arrest and trial the substitutionary sacrifice and Jesus ministry of intercession now. Yes, a devotional exegesis but check it for yourself…
It clearly shows a life of complete devotion to the will law and purpose of God; a life of holiness and prayer – there are a number perhaps who would fit that description but the writer of this psalm said he has kept it all – I have kept thy law – with all my heart. Who else could say that?
Prayer needs a special mention – every verse is address to God, is a conversation a prayer request or observation – it demonstrates such intimacy with God
The internal structure – the progression – the claims v.160 the portrayal of salvation as receiving God’s righteousness and peace. It would actually be very introspective and self-absorbed almost egotistical if it did not portray the life / teaching / suffering and passionate heart of God Himself in the person of His Son

I have put a series of four videos on YouTube starting with:

I would be happy to present the study to a Church or Bible study group… Please get in touch
