Finding a moment with God
27th August 2020
Ruth Lilley spent an early morning on the beach, and enjoyed a peaceful moment with God
For me, one of the many bonuses of living in Norfolk is being so close to the sea. There is something special about being near the sea, either looking out from the clifftop or dipping my toes in for a paddle
I was grateful when restrictions were eased, and we were able to visit the seaside again. I also feel privileged that we were able to have a holiday there very recently. Most mornings, I went down to the beach - a wonderful way to start the day. One morning, the view was particularly beautiful, and it was good to just pause and be in the moment. The sea wasn’t even as cold as usual!
As I sat on the beach, I thought I didn’t really want the moment to end. Then I was struck by another thought - I realised that it would be this moment that would get me through the day. Not because the day was going to be tough, I was actually really looking forward to all that was happening that day, just simply because that short moment had given me grounding. A reminder that the foundation on which I stand is always faithful
If I did not take the time for these moments, there would not be the opportunity for such reminders, and I may well start the day from a less secure footing, placing too much importance on myself
These moments can happen in many different places - in a room, snuggled into a chair, outside on a garden bench, kneeling by a bedside, walking from here to there, even standing at the kitchen sink! All that is necessary is just the space and the time to pause
I did have to go out of my way to find this moment. Even though I was on holiday, I had to get up earlier and walk down to the beach. However, it was worth it. There is such beauty to be found in the moment - peace, security, rest, strength, certainty, and hope
We have found ourselves in a time where there is so much uncertainty and things seem to be changing on a daily basis. I know that I need to make those moments a priority; to be reminded that the sun will rise on a new day and the sea will ebb and flow. To be secure in my steps, because I have taken time to call to mind the One who guides me and is always taking me by the hand
He is sat with me in those moments and comes with me as I leave those moments. In everything, He is by my side
“Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He’s the one who will keep you on track”
Proverbs 3:5-6 (The Message)
