Great Yarmouth churches community action guide published
Imagine Norfolk Together has published “Church in the Community”, a directory of services provided by churches in the Great Yarmouth area, and many have been surprised at how much community action they are involved in. Tony Rothe, Network East Norfolk, reports
The directory was launched at the Great Yarmouth ‘Celebrate’ event in November 2018 and contains sections on Children, Youth and Families, Building Community, Food and Crisis Provision, Health and Wellbeing, and Debt Money. It lists every church providing a service in each category, along with the area covered, the type of service or activity, which day(s) of the week it happens, venue address and contact details
“The directory emerged out of the Community Ministry Breakfasts that I run and a desire from the members there to have a combined list of everything the churches are doing to demonstrate the love of God in the local community” explained Anna Heydon, pictured right, Development Worker with Imagine Norfolk Together
The directory is regularly updated online, but ministry leaders requested a paper format that people visiting the Foodbank, etc. could take away with them. As a result, a thousand copies have been distributed to local churches, charities and statutory services
“The guide has been very well received, especially by those outside of the church, many of whom have expressed surprise at how much the Church is doing” said Anna
Imagine Norfolk Together is a joint venture between the Church Urban Fund and the Diocese of Norwich. Their aim is to celebrate and support the work of local Christians in their community by providing churches with support as they develop and deliver social action initiatives, running workshops, training and events in order to build people's capacity to take action, and developing local partnerships
