Father Simon to run London marathon

28th September 2022
EMAUS UK 10-2022

In late July a group of about a dozen from the parish visited the Emmaus community at Ditchingham. Emmaus UK is the charity I am running the London Marathon in support of
Emmaus is a charity which supports people who have been homeless but does it in a very specific and supportive way: This is by creating communities where companions (as the residents are known) live together and work together and generate their own income together, and, by supporting each other, overcome the deep and complex issues experienced by those who have endured homelessness. The ethic of community peer support is integral
Arriving at Ditchingham we were made very welcome and greeted warmly by the community leader, Celine. We were guided around the community which is housed in beautiful former convent buildings; a place which a number of a party had been to before. In those atmospheric Victorian buildings you will find room after room of second-hand goods for sale, he will also find a fantastic coffee shop with some wonderful cake. You can also wander through the orchard where there is some climbing and play equipment for children and buy a few plants. If it is open you can see the Forge where companions learn new skills and the garden which under the care of one of the Companions is growing with an aspiration to produce food to feed the community
We heard how one of the wonderful things about an Emmaus community is that it is a home for life, companions are not housed there for a short while only but can stay and some indeed stay for many, many years. Others may dwell there a short time before moving on after the community gave them the place and stability they needed at that time. All of this is done with the support of experienced professional advisors
Emmaus is open to the public. You can enjoy a visit at any time and in doing so, you can help others by shopping and eating cake
