Sunday 22nd November

Heavenly Father, in a few minutes I will go to get my breakfast; I will choose what I would like to eat; I do not have to worry if there will be any breakfast available, but I know there are those who do

If I want a drink, I simply go to the kitchen and turn the tap to get clean water; I do not have to walk miles to get water, but I know there are those do, for some perhaps dirty water filled with parasites, which may lead to sickness, disease, or even death

I do not live in fear for my life, that someone will seek me out because I believe in Jesus, but I know there are those who do, who suffer persecution for their faith; Father bless them today for their courage and trust in You

I have a roof over my head, but there are those who don't

I have a bed to sleep in but there are those who don't

I have food in the cupboard, in the fridge, in the freezer, well stocked for days to come; but there are those who don't, those who don't even know where their next meal will come from

I do not have to watch my children or grandchildren suffer starvation or even hunger, but there are many who do

Jesus said, "In this life you will have trouble".  Well, that is certainly true, but I am aware that my troubles are momentary, light afflictions, but for some their burdens are heavy, constant

Thank You for everyone who works to alleviate suffering, those who give time and those who give money, but especially those who give their lives; bless them today.  I have not given my life, but I know there is One who has
Amen

Saturday 21st November

Heavenly Father, thank You for watching over me, for guiding me.  Just as a watch will not get me anywhere on time, so the Law will not stop me from sinning.  Both will help, both will guide, both can raise an alarm, but it is up to me to get there on time, it is up to me to choose to do the right thing

Thank You for my watch which helps me to get to places on time.  Thank You for Your Law, which helps me to know what is right and what is wrong.  Thank You for forgiving me when I am late.  Thank You for forgiving me when I do the wrong thing

Does knowing You will forgive me for being late mean I shouldn't worry about being on time?  No, I am encouraged to try my best to be punctual!

Does knowing You will forgive me when I sin mean I needn't think about doing the right thing?  No, I am encouraged to try even harder to do the right thing!

Why?  Because of Your great love for me.  My watch tells me the time, Your Law tell me the Truth. The Law tells me the way, Jesus, You are the Way, You have shown me the Way

Thank You that Your presence is a promise: "The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged"

Thank You that wherever I go You are with me, Your Spirit guards and guides me: whether You turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, "This is the Way; walk in it".  All my days I will sing this song of gladness, I will trust in the Cross of my Redeemer.  Thank You, wonderful Saviour
Amen

Friday 20th November

Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing Your Word to life!  Thank You that as we look into the  Bible and read Your Word to us You bring it to life, enabling us to see the deeper meaning within the words we read

How often do we read a passage of scripture and find a new explanation about life, a revelation to us about Your love, Your Spirit, Your Son, Your Way?  How often do we read what we have read so many times before but it is as if we had never read it?  We see something new, we understand something we had not understood before; Your Spirit breathes new life into Your Word, giving us fresh hope, new energy, a new desire to meet with You, to hear from You, to trust You

And thank You Father for Your Word bringing to life, for breathing life into the dead body of Lazarus so He was resurrected!  Jesus said to Martha, the sister of Lazarus, who at that moment was dead in the grave, "I AM the resurrection and the Life. The one who believes in Me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in Me will never die.  Do you believe this?"  Jesus then raised Lazarus from the dead, His Word breathing new life into him, "Lazarus, come out!"  And we are told, "The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen and a cloth around his face"

Thank You Father that You also brought Your Word, Jesus, to life, raising Him from the dead, resurrected!  You have given us Your Word, Your promise and, in the resurrection of Jesus, it is delivered; and so are all who believe in Him
Amen

Thursday 19th November

Heavenly Father, thank You that when we have even a shadow of a doubt about Your love for us we can turn to Your Word, to the written Word, and to Jesus and find assurance of Your love for us.  We find that You so loved the world that You gave Your only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not die but will have eternal life

We find that the mountains and hills may crumble, but Your love for us will never end; "I will keep for ever my promise of peace", so says the Lord who loves us.  We find and remember that You, the Lord, are merciful and loving, slow to become angry and full of constant love.  We discover that when we were still helpless, Christ died for the wicked at the time You chose!

It is a difficult thing for someone to die for a righteous person.  It may even be that someone might dare to die for a good person, but You showed how much You love us - it was while we were still sinners that Christ died for us!

You tell us that You, our Lord and our God, are with us; Your power gives us victory.  You take delight in us and in Your love You will give us new life.  You sing over us and are joyful over us.  You have ended the threat of doom and taken away our disgrace.  What a great, wonderful, loving God and Father You are!

I can come to You, tired and weary, and You will give me rest.  Your love in Jesus means: a future I could never have hoped for or gained by my own means or strength; a present filled with Your love and power; and a past which no longer counts against me.  Thank You
Amen

Wednesday 18th November

Heavenly Father, today will be a tough day.  We can say that with certainty because every day is a tough day!

How do we get through each day?

How can we manage all that life throws at us?

How can we cope when faced with problems that we cannot solve, situations that are beyond our control?

How do we survive the anguish of seeing loved ones in pain, those we care about suffering, and it seems we have nothing we can offer to relieve their distress?

You tell us, "Do you not know?  Have you not heard?  The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.  He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall, but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint"

Thank You for this promise!  Thank You that You renew our strength when we put our hope in You.  Thank You for the peace that Jesus gives us: "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid"

In the toughest of days we can have peace!  "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God which transcends understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus".  Thank You Jesus
Amen

Tuesday 17th November

Heavenly Father, I shared a thought yesterday with some friends online and found myself praying about it for the rest of the day and even through the night: "We can learn a great deal about the universe at university but we learn more about ourselves through adversity".  We get used to the idea that in this life we will have troubles; Jesus made it quite clear that we would, but it seems that some people never really had a chance

Lord, I want to pray for those children who are facing, it seems, a life without hope.  So often we read statistics like this, "27% of the prison population, and half of all prisoners under 25, were in care".  Rick Warren said recently, "We can live for weeks without food, days without water, seconds without air, but we cannot live without hope"

Father, we see that hurt people hurt people; that the abused becomes the abuser; our experience shapes us and makes us what we are; nature and nurture work together to form us. But, we are not what we are meant to be.  For some people, the only school they ever attended was the school of hard knocks

Thank You for everyone who tries to help young people to start again afresh, but there are those who abuse and hide within the system; Jesus said, "It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble"

Thank You for Jesus who can reshape us by renewing our minds.  Thank You for everyone who triumphs over adversity.  Thank You for our hope in Jesus
Amen

Monday 16th November

Heavenly Father, thank You for the words of songs and hymns which Your Word encourages us to use: "Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through Psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts"

Even today there will be songwriters who will be inspired by Your Holy Spirit to write a new song. There will poets who write a new poem which glorifies Your Holy Name. There will be authors who write books which explore the meaning of Your Word and enable people to see, almost like giving sight to the blind. There will be some who open their mouths and speak Your Word in a new Way, which helps us to understand the Way, even though it will be about the Ancient of Day

You tell us, "Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil"

Thank You for the amazing Way You have provided to help us to remember the most basic principles of our faith, our trust in Jesus. We sing, "In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my Light, my strength, my song"

Thank You that You are at work every day!  "See, I AM doing a new thing!  Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?  I AM making a Way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland"

"There is One Name under Heaven by which men can be saved; Jesus, Jesus alone".  Our words may be here today, gone tomorrow; Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away"
Amen
