Letter from Nancy June 2020

HANDSDear Readers

I’ll start with a prayer for the month:
Father of all, help us to love as you love, and to give as you give. Help us to be generous both materially and spiritually towards those in need. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

We are living in unprecedented times completely new to us and quite hard to comprehend, but I feel we are learning from them. We have become more aware of the predicament of others, more concerned for their welfare, as we ask what we can do to help. I know because of lockdown we can’t visit them, but we can phone them and pray for them and not forget our donations to the Food Bank either in goods or money as the needs are increasing daily and funds getting less

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if at the end of this situation we are now in, that we have all become a more thoughtful and generous people. That would really be a big plus

More time on our hands these days? Why not pray on our hands?

  1. Your thumb is nearest to you and without it you are helpless. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you, without whom you too would be lost. They are the easiest to remember

  2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal, including teachers, doctors and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Pray for them

  3. The next finger is the tallest finger. Reminding us of our leaders. Pray for the Queen, the Prime Minister, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Church, leaders in business and industry. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God’s guidance

  4. The fourth finger our ring finger. Surprisingly this is our weakest finger, as any piano teacher will tell you. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need our prayers

  5. Lastly comes the little finger. The smallest finger of all which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, “The last shall be the greatest among you”. Yours should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively

We should start all our prayers by thanking God for all his mercy, goodness, guidance, support, and encouragement day by day. He is always there, never fails us when we fail him many times. We have so much to be grateful for, his constant kindness and graciousness to us. Let us always remember to thank him. As that well known poet George Herbert prayed many, many years ago, “Lord thou hast given so much to me. Give me one more thing, a grateful heart
God Bless
Nancy
