Gorleston Gal’s Community News December 2018

6th December 2018
as published by St Andrew's Church in the Gorleston Community Magazine

I’m writing about October, in November for the December magazine! That’s how publishing deadlines work. October saw brilliant sunshine for our beach clean, but I’m writing in the dark of a November afternoon! However, by Remembrance Sunday it was glorious sunshine again

We love you sending in your stories. If you have an idea but don’t want to write it yourself, get in touch with the magazine and I will interview you. You can contact the magazine on gorleston.community.magazine@gmail.com or call on 0771 4763521

GORLESTON GAL 12-2018AGorleston Community Beach Clean

From an idea and a quick message last October to local resident Peter Kirkpatrick, we find ourselves one year on organising a beach clean with double the number of people. I was so proud of our community as I watched the progress of our volunteers along the beach. The final count was an amazing 126 with around 50 of those being children. Having the light up noisy pickers and the prospect of finding painted rocks really drew the crowds

Alison and Holly Crombie travelled from Ely. They saw the BBC Drowning in Plastics programme and decided they would like to help. After looking on the Marine Conservation Society page, they found Gorleston beach. They were very complimentary about how clean the beach is, as much of the rubbish we get here is small plastics like bottle caps, crisp packets, and cigarette ends. They did find the day’s largest piece of rubbish – a large chunk of rusty metal

GORLESTON GAL 12-2018COther beach cleaners were amazed at the number of filled dog poo bags that are left on the beach. What is the point of going to the trouble of bagging it if you then leave it on the steps? There are many bins on the seafront so there is little excuse for it. Here’s Sam Wright age 6, with the final collection! Great job everyone, next one will be after Easter 2019. We have had donations in equipment and cash in that year from the Great Yarmouth Lions, Bradwell Co-Op, Cliff Hotel, Pokemon Go, as well as terrific support from Jay Jays, Marina Bay, Stormhouse Cafes, and the Doggy Diner

If you are interested, like our Facebook page, Gorleston Community Beach Clean, or watch out for posters in the cafes around the seafront in April 2019

Gorleston Remembers

We had 2 events, one at the Coastwatch Station on the pier and one at the memorial on the quayside. This is for the Air Sea Rescue who operated from Gorleston in WWII

GORLESTON GAL 12-2018D My neighbour, Virginia Buck, was laying flowers in memory of her father, Derrick Murgatroyd, with members of her family, Felicity and Alanna Collins. Virginia was telling me about her father being stationed at Gorleston during WWII and her mother, Joan, coming to visit. Joan was a serving WREN but the landlady wouldn’t let Derrick across the threshold of the B & B where she stayed until they were engaged. It’s so important to pass on these family stories to the next generation as it makes history seem real

I met some of the crew who served in Cyprus together in the Air Sea Rescue Service. I was so interested to hear their story that I will be writing an article about them in the New Year. Here we have Dave Batchelor, Steve Merrett, John Leech, Joe Thomas , Steve McKay, and Rev Peter Paine, Great Yarmouth Port Chaplain, who officiated

GORLESTON GAL 12-2018EPavilion Theatre Restoration Fund

Did you know that it’s the 125th anniversary of the Pavilion Theatre building? The Restoration Fund is a charity that is fundraising to save it for future generations. We supported it by attending a fun Murder Mystery Evening which was only £5. Local amateur actors from the Pavilion Players took to the stage for an interactive evening and the place was full. When Danny Boyle, Jimmy Tarbuck, and the BGT team have visited, they all commented on the obvious community spirit we have. The next Murder Mystery is the 11th May 2019. Can you guess Who Dunnit? Come and join the fun
