Plenty going on at the Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival

MARITIME FESTIVAL 2017 E9th September 2017

The Great Yarmouth Seafarers Centre, in association with the Mission to Seafarers, had a stall and the profits will be shared with the Mission.  The stall was selling various maritime-linked articles and sand art; as well as their now famous buzzwire challenge game with a prize of tea for two at the Imperial Hotel

The team of dedicated volunteers is manning the stall over the two days, supported by the Port chaplain and directors

All proceeds from this event will be used towards the refurbishment of the toilets and shower room at the centre

As you walk around the Festival on the quay, you can hear the sounds of shanty singing groups, including one which sang a shanty to the tune of the hymn ‘Be Thou My Vision’

MARITIME FESTIVAL 2017 GThe Mayor, Cllr Robinson-Payne, and Mayoress visited the event and had a great time roaming about and chatting will many people

There were many stalls selling items including handmade jewellery, ceramics, children’s toys, decorative pieces, painting lessons, squids corner, and many seafaring related charitable support organisations

There were many types of sea craft moored: both sail and engine.  Gardline’s Triton (a seemingly massive ship) had its gangplank down and was inviting visitors aboard

People were thronging everywhere and having a really great time: aided by the added bonus of sunny weather as opposed the the recent forecasts of otherwise

There’s a range of boats that have docked in at South Quay. You can go aboard the George Stephenson, which is new for this year. The ship is made completely from recycled materials; there is nothing new on it

One of the world’s largest remaining wooden tall ships, the Kaskelot is also docked for visitors to look around and steam drifter, Lydia Eva is also welcoming visitors aboard

There are performances throughout the festival from singers, bands, and groups from as close as Great Yarmouth to as far as Barcelona

The East Norfolk Militia has shows on throughout both days. Expect some dastardly deeds and plenty of gun powder

The DLR Freestyle Jet Ski display team will be performing on the water, with a range of stunts from backflips and barrel rolls to submarines and fountains in the river

There are lots of free fun things to get involved with, from watching a Punch and Judy performance, getting stuck in with some arts and crafts and try your hand at spinning
